Cockatoos
Cockatoo Parrots were originally imported from Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia, the Moluccas & the Phillipines. These birds have a majesty all their own. Not as large as a macaw nor as brightly colored as either a Macaw or an Amazon, Cockatoo Parrots stand out in their own right, simply regal birds. The best-known Cockatoo Parrots are white with various shades of yellow, pink or orange, usually in the crest. All Cockatoos have a somewhat solid, square build & all have a crest that stands up when they are excited, agitated or just want some attention.
Some Cockatoos are not outstanding talkers, but maybe when you look like a Cockatoo you don't have to say much. These birds are exceptionally loving birds, if obtained when young &, of course, are hand fed. They are natural chewers, so they need wood or branches to chew on. Cockatoo Parrots like the other big parrots are usually very long-lived, living 30 years or longer. You remember Barretta's bird, Fred, for those of you old enough to remember the dark ages of TV, years & years ago? That was a Cockatoo.

This birds are becoming rare in the wild & many of the birds bred in captivity go into a breeding program rather than a pet bird situation. Consequently, Major Mitchell's Cockatoo Parrots are expensive. They are a beautiful pink color with a tri-colored crest. |
